In 1971 John Tice founded and operated Small Engine Machine Works Inc. We developed and refined a chemical method of marking 2-Cycle engine ports. This technique enables the machinist to do extremely precision cylinder liner replacement not possible with other methods. Our most common job was the manufacture and installation of 2-Cycle cylinder liners (sleeves). Small Engine continued to grow and prosper for 10 years. We did machine work nationwide on cycles, snowmobiles and many different kinds of equipment. Small Engine was N.W. distributor for Wiesco Pistons, DH Reed Valves, and the Los Angeles Sleeve Co.
In the early 80’s, Small Engine was split into two separate companies. Charlie Brown, a long time Small Engine lead man founded the Superior Sleeve Co. Bill Wagner won the manufacturing procedures patterns and customers of Small Engine. Mr. Wagner founded the N.W. Sleeve Co. Linda Wagner is now President of N.W. Sleeve. Both companies continue to grow and operate today.
Jim Tice father of John became ill and was forced to retire. John stepped in and became the president of the family business, Tice Industries Inc. John also taught senior machine shop at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon. John continued to operate Tice Industries until the late 90's, then also took a medical retirement.
At present, John has reopened www.smallenginemachineworks.com , Continues to manufacture & install quality Cylinder Liners. During the early days, Gary Metchkoff (L.A. sleeve) and Dale Herbrandson (DH Reed Valves) provided an immeasureable mentorship and we would like to provide a similar mentorship to our present customers.
